In Greek mythology, the Gigantes fought against Zeus and the other Olympian gods. The hero Hercules sided with Zeus after receiving a prophecy that the side supported by the humans would win, and was a major player in the battle. The story is often the subject of sculpture, with the most famous being the friezes in the Sifnian Treasury at Delphi and the Great Altar at Pergamon.
