Russian composer. He studied under Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in his hometown, and after graduating, he taught theory and composition at his alma mater, nurturing Prokofiev and Myaskovsky. He interacted with the composers of the "Five" and participated in Belyayev's group. He was also active as a conductor. He collected and published Russian folk songs, and left behind orchestral pieces such as "Baba Yaga" (1891?-1904) and "Kikimora" (1909), as well as miniature-style piano pieces based on the fantastic world of Russian folk tales.
