Thomas Bradwardine

Around 1290 - 1349
A mathematician, natural philosopher, and theologian who was a representative figure of the Merton School (a school of thought on the theory of motion centered around Merton College) in 14th-century England at Oxford. He was a favorite of Edward III. He was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1349, but died of the plague about a month later. As his name is mentioned in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, he was renowned as a theologian at the time, and is the author of his great work, On the Divine Cause (completed around 1344, same below). His contribution to the history of science is immortalized in On the Proportion of Speeds in Motions (1328).

14世紀イギリス，オックスフォードのマートン学派(マートン･カレッジを中心とする運動論の学統)を代表する数学者，自然哲学者，神学者。エドワード3世の寵愛をうける。1349年カンタベリー大司教に任ぜられたが，約1ヵ月後にペストのため没した。チョーサーの《カンタベリー物語》にその名が言及されているように，神学者として当時令名高く，大著《神の原因について》(1344ころ執筆完成，以下同)がある。また科学史上の貢献は，《運動における速さの比について》(1328)によって不滅である。
