Rāi Limbu (English spelling)
An ethnic group in the eastern mountainous region of Nepal. They consist of the Rai and Limbu, collectively known as Kirānti. The population of the Rai is about 230,000, and that of the Limbu about 170,000 (1971). They speak the Tibeto-Burman languages of Rai and Limbu, but within Rai, there are large dialect differences among the subgroups with different names that are distributed along the valleys. It is also said that the Limbu language has a written language. The Limbu live in scattered villages at 800-2000m on the slopes of the valleys in Mechi and Kosi districts in the easternmost part, and the Rai in Sagarmatha district to the west. They grow rice, corn, and raise cattle, goats, and pigs.
