Riyādh (English spelling)
The capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia. Located in the Najd region in the center of the Arabian Peninsula, it is connected to major cities by road and air. In 1824, it became the capital of the House of Saud, which was based in the Najd region. It was a desert oasis city with a population of about 30,000, but became the capital of Saudi Arabia when the state was founded in 1932. It has developed through oil and transportation, and the royal palace in the center of the city and other Arabian-style buildings are rapidly being replaced by concrete buildings. It is the political, economic, and educational center, and is home to the royal palace, various government offices, and Riyadh University. It is also home to a cement factory and an oil refinery. Population: 5,188,286 (2010 provisional).
