Private. It was founded in 1900 (Meiji 33) by Naruse Jinzo to open the door to higher education for women, which was closed at the time, as Japan Women's University. Naruse established the Department of Home Economics, Department of Japanese Literature, and Department of English Literature in the university department in accordance with the then-current Technical School Act. He continued to work to improve the university as a comprehensive university and to institutionalize a new women's university in accordance with the University Act, but his efforts were rejected by the Ministry of Education, and the university was not recognized as a university before the war. However, after World War II, in 1948 (Showa 23), it quickly became one of the first universities under the new system to consist of two faculties and nine departments. As of 2010 (Heisei 22), it has four faculties (Home Economics, Literature, Human Sociology, and Science), and five graduate schools (Home Economics, Literature, Human Life Studies, Human Society, and Science). It also has an affiliated kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, and high school. It has maintained its tradition and achievements as the first women's university in Japan. Its headquarters is at 2-8-1 Mejirodai, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo.
