British insect physiologist. Born into a family of doctors, he graduated from Cambridge University and obtained a Doctor of Medicine. He taught medical entomology in London and became professor of zoology at Cambridge University, succeeding ADImms, until his retirement in 1967. He was knighted in 1964. He is said to be the founder of modern insect physiology. His research on the relationship between insect metamorphosis and brain hormones and juvenile hormones using the assassin bug Rhodnius prolixus is famous, and his book The Principle of Insect Physiology (first published in 1939, now in its seventh edition in 1972 after various major revisions) remains a classic in the field to this day.

イギリスの昆虫生理学者。医者の家に生まれ，ケンブリッジ大学を卒業。医学博士。ロンドンで医用昆虫学を教え，イムズA.D.Immsの後任としてケンブリッジ大学動物学教授に就任，1967年退職。1964年には爵位を受ける。現代的な意味での昆虫生理学の創始者といわれる。オオサシガメRhodnius prolixusを用いた昆虫の変態と脳ホルモンおよび幼若ホルモンとの関係の研究は有名であり，その著《昆虫生理学の原理The Principle of Insect Physiology》(初版は1939年，さまざまな大改訂を経て現在は1972年の第7版)はこの分野における古典の地位を今も失っていない。
