Russian composer and music critic. He received basic musical education from an early age, but graduated from the St. Petersburg Military Engineering School. In 1856, he met Balakirev, the theorist of the "Five", and began his musical career, but at the same time served as a professor at his alma mater. As a French-Lithuanian, his style of composition differs from that of other "Five" composers such as Mussorgsky, who had strong ethnic influences. His ten operas, including "William Ratcliffe" (1869), are influenced by Meyerbeer, and his piano pieces and many songs have lyrical melodies in the style of Chopin. However, he made a great contribution as a critic to supporting the activities of the "Five". His most popular violin solo piece, "Oriental", is the ninth piece in the 24-piece "Kaleidoscope" (1893).
