Limousin - Limousin (English spelling)

Limousin - Limousin (English spelling)

A historical region and former province in southwestern France. It is located at the northwestern edge of the Massif Central, and borders the regions of Marche to the north, Auvergne to the east, Quercy to the south, and Angmeaux to the west. It is still used as an administrative region, and corresponds to the three departments of Corrèze, Creuse, and Haute-Bienne. The total area of the three departments is 16,942 square kilometers, and the population is 710,939 (1999). The capital city is Limoges. It is an undulating plateau made of crystalline schist and granite, sloping from the center to the west and south. Livestock farming is popular in the north, and grapes and vegetables are grown in the south. Industry is not very developed, and mining has declined, but uranium has been discovered in recent years. The name Limousin comes from the Lémovices people of ancient Gaul, and it was ruled by Rome. In 918, it became the Duchy of Aquitaine. It had been an English territory since the 12th century, but became a French territory under Henry IV in 1607. Economically, it was left behind until the economic reforms of the 18th century under the politician Turgot. Even today, it remains economically weak, sparsely populated, and rural, far from urbanization.
