These castles were built by the Japanese army in southern Korea during the Bunroku-Keicho Invasion (1592-98). When the Japanese army invaded Korea, they were used as bases to store military supplies from Japan and secure supply routes. Over 20 castles were built on the coasts of Gyeongsang and Jeolla provinces, many of which have ruins. In addition, there were over 10 connecting castles between Busan and Pyongyang, and over 20 Japanese castles in various locations, but these were temporary and no remains are known. The layout of the castles was such that Busan Castle controlled the whole, and at key points in each region, there was a main castle under the stewardship of a daimyo, and a branch castle (sub-castle) to protect it.
