Banque de l'Indochine

Banque de l'Indochine
A French colonial bank established in 1875. Its Chinese name was Banque Oriental Huili. It was granted the exclusive right to issue banknotes in French Indochina, but also engaged in general banking and adhered to a strict profit-making philosophy. In the early 20th century, it expanded its branch network to China and became a gateway for French capital to enter the Far East, but after World War I it shifted its focus to the development of Indochina, actively participating in the establishment and capital increase of mines and plantations, and dominating the colonial economy. It converted into a private bank in 1947.
