Prachathipok (English spelling)
1893‐1941
The 7th King of the Rattanakosin Dynasty of Thailand. Reigned 1925-35. Commonly known as Rama VII. In 1906, at the age of 13, he studied in England, mainly military science. After returning to Thailand in 1915, he served in the army. When asked to become king after the death of his sonless brother, he initially refused. He had little desire for power, and upon ascending to the throne he established a Supreme Advisory Council consisting of five members of the royal family, and took collective leadership during the financial crisis that began at the end of the previous king's reign. He was also caught up in the Great Depression at the time, and was forced to make difficult decisions such as reducing the number of civil servants, cutting salaries, and streamlining government offices.
