A city in the province of Forlì, in the southeastern part of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. It is located near the mouth of the Marecchia River, which flows into the Adriatic Sea. It is at the eastern end of the ancient Roman Via Emilia and was an Etruscan town, but was occupied by the Romans in 268 BC and developed as a colony. It became an important base for the Roman army during the Second Punic War, and was subsequently ruled by the Byzantines, Goths, Lombards, and Franks. It became an independent city in the 13th century, but the Malatesta family ruled it from the end of the 13th century to the beginning of the 16th century, and it became a Papal State in 1509, and was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1860. Today, it is known as a resort and beach destination, and industries such as food, tobacco, textiles, medicines, and furniture have developed. At the southern entrance, the Arch of Augustus, built in 27 BC, remains, and the bridge over the Marecchia River also dates from the same period. Other attractions include the Roman amphitheater, a 13th century cathedral, and the ruins of the 15th century Malatesta Castle. Population: 143,321 (2011 estimate).
