The ruins of the Zapotec culture are located in the Oaxaca Basin in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The city maintained its status as one of the most advanced cultural cities in Mesoamerica during the Preclassic and Classic periods. Built on a hill, the city features temples, an observatory, and a ball court centered around a large plaza. Underground tombs were also built throughout the city. The meticulously constructed tomb chambers are decorated with murals and sculptures, and most of the wealth of the time is stored here.
