...Ihara Saikaku's "Danshoku Taikan," which describes the customs of the townspeople around the Genroku period (1688-1704), tells us that newly invented toys, such as paper mache crafts for children, all of which resemble the prototypes of local toys, were already being sold at the toy stores in Moriba, Osaka. Furthermore, the toy picture book "Edo Nishiki" (Edo Nishiki) (Kitao Shigemasa), published in 1773 (An'ei 2), depicts 88 types of Edo toys that were popular at the time. …元禄(1688‐1704)ころの市井風俗を描いた井原西鶴の《男色大鑑》は，大坂盛場の手遊び屋(玩具店)に子ども向きの張子細工などの，いずれも郷土玩具の祖型をおもわせる新考案玩具類がすでに売られている模様を伝えている。さらに1773年(安永2)刊の玩具絵本《江都二色（えどにしき）》(北尾重政)には，当時流行した88種の江戸玩具が描かれている。そのなかには鶯笛（うぐいすぶえ），振り鼓（つづみ），犬張子など現在も郷土玩具として残され各地に散在しているものが数多く収録されている。…
