Liv - Liv (English spelling) Líf

The ancestor of humans who appears in Norse mythology. According to the Edda, when the chief god Odin asked who would survive when a terrible winter comes to humans near the end of the world, the knowledgeable giant Bahuthruðnir answered, "The two, Lib and Lifthrasir, will hide in the forest of Hodmimir and survive by eating morning dew, and humans will be born from them." Lib does not appear anywhere else, so there are many unknowns about him, but the meaning of the word Lib is "life," and Lifthrasir means "something bursting with life."

北欧神話に現れる人間の祖。『エッダ』によると、世界の終末近くに恐ろしい冬が人間たちの所にやってくるとき、だれが生き延びられるかという主神オーディンの問いに対し、物知り巨人のバフスルーズニルは「リブとリフトラシールの2人がホッドミミルの森のなかに身を隠し、朝露を食べて生き延び、それから人間たちが生まれるだろう」と答えたという。リブはこれ以外には現れず不明な点が多いが、リブの語義は「生命」を表し、リフトラシールは「生命ではちきれそうなもの」を意味する。
