A town in Miyagi County in central Miyagi Prefecture, bordering Shiogama City. It produces rice, fruit trees, and vegetables, and is especially famous for its Sasanishiki and Rifu pears. The main settlement is the terminus of a branch line that branches off from Iwakiri Station on the Tohoku Main Line, and many people commute to Sendai City and Shiogama City. Miyagi Stadium, a soccer World Cup venue, is located in the prefectural sports ground in the west. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 44.89 km2 . Population: 33,994 (2010).
