The Living Theatre

An American theater company founded in 1947 by director and actor Julian Beck and his wife Judith Malina, and based in New York. Based in a small theater that opened in 1959, they had a major impact by staging shocking plays that rejected conventional realism, such as Jack Gelber's "Connection," which deals with drug addicts, and Kenneth H. Brown's "The Brigade," set in a US Navy brigade.

アメリカの劇団。1947年，演出家で俳優のベックJulian BeckとマリーナJudith Malinaの夫妻が中心となって結成し，ニューヨークで活動。59年に開場した小劇場を本拠として，麻薬患者を扱ったゲルバーJack Gelberの《コネクション》，アメリカ海軍の営倉を舞台にしたブラウンKenneth H.Brownの《営倉》など，衝撃的題材を扱った劇を在来のリアリズムを否定した手法で上演し，大きな影響を与えた。
