It is the first tributary of the Ishikari River system that flows through the central north of Hokkaido. It originates in the Teshio Mountains, flows south in a vertical valley, and enters the northern part of the Ishikari Plain, merging with the Ishikari River west of Fukagawa City. It is 155 km long. The upper river valley is a deep snow area with snowfall of up to 4 meters, comparable to the foot of Mt. Yotei. Because of the large water retention capacity, three dams have been built to hold the water, and artificial lakes, Lake Shumarinai and Lake Utsunaiko, have been created and are used for power generation and irrigation. River terraces have developed in the river valley, forming settlements and farmland. The lower reaches are in the northern part of the Ishikari Plain, and include peatlands such as Chippubetsugenya and Ohogenya, but land improvement has progressed to form a part of a grain-producing region centered on rice paddies.
