Village Headman's Association - What is the mechanism?

Japanese: 名主組合 - なぬしくみあい

In early modern Edo, this refers to the regional grouping of headman (town headman) who were in charge of governing the town under the magistrate and town elders. In 1713 (Shotoku 3), the towns numbered 933, and in 1745 (Enkyo 2), there were 1678 town headmen, and in 1715 there were 196 headman, and in 1722 (Kyoho 7), there were 264 headman. In order to facilitate the transmission of town notices, an important job of the headman, the headman was already organized by region in the Shotoku period (1711-16), such as the Nihonbashi Kita/Chu/Minami Association, the Kanda Association, and the Shiba Association, and a yearly headman was elected for each association, but it is not clear when this was established.

近世の江戸において，町奉行および町年寄の下に町方支配を担当した名主(町名主)の地域別グループ編成をいう。1713年(正徳3)に933町，45年(延享2)に1678町を数えた町々に，1715年には196人，1722年(享保7)には264人の名主がいた。名主の重要な職務である町触（まちぶれ）の伝達の便宜などのために，すでに正徳期(1711‐16)には日本橋北･中･南組合，神田組合，芝組合などの地域別編成が行われ，組合ごとに年番名主が選出されていたが，その成立時期は明らかではない。
