Prince Takayoshi

Japanese:
Prince Takayoshi
Year of death: 4th year of Kenmu/2nd year of Engen (4th year of Kenmu/6th year of Engen) (7th April 1337)
Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. Imperial family during the Northern and Southern Courts period. Son of Emperor Go-Daigo. Also called "Takanaga." His mother was the daughter of the poet Nijō Tameyo, and he was the son of the poet. In 1326, he came of age and was appointed Nakatsukasakyo, and was later promoted to the rank of First Rank, and was known as First Rank Nakatsukasakyo Imperial Prince. During the Genkō Rebellion (1331), he was exiled to Tosa, but returned to Kyoto in 1333. In 1335, as Shogun, he led an eastern expedition with Nitta Yoshisada and others to defeat Ashikaga Takauji, but was defeated and took up residence in Kanazaki Castle in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture). In March 1337, he committed suicide when Kanazaki Castle fell. Some say he was 27 years old at the time, and that he was born in 1311, with his half-mother Prince Morinaga, born in 1308, being older than him. However, based on research into the year of his mother Tameko's death, historical evidence that suggests his younger brother Prince Muneyoshi was born in 1308, and the fact that he is listed as Ichinomiya in both the Taiheiki and Masukagami, some say that Prince Takayoshi was the first prince born during the Tokuji era (1306-1308), and was the oldest of Emperor Godaigo's sons. He is a poet who has one poem included in the imperial anthology Zoku Goshuishu and 44 in Shinyoshu, and who composed a work entitled Ichinomiya Hyakushu. <Works> Ichinomiya Hyakushu (Shinpen Kokuga Taikan, Vol. 10)
