The remains of a Roman city in the Atlas Plateau in northeastern Algeria. It is a colonial city built by the Roman Emperor Trajan around 100 AD and is said to have been designed by the imperial army. Roads run in a grid pattern from east to west, north to south, colonnades line the main streets, and at the western end stands the Arch of Trajan, built in the 2nd or 3rd century. Temples, theaters, libraries, meeting halls, baths, and more remain almost perfectly intact. A grand, well-planned city, it is also known as the "Pompeii of North Africa." It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1982.

アルジェリア北東部のアトラス高原にあるローマ時代の都市遺跡。100年ごろ，ローマ皇帝トラヤヌスによって建設された植民都市で，帝国軍による設計とされる。東西南北に碁盤の目のように道路が走り，大通りに沿って列柱が並び，西端には２−３世紀の建造のトラヤヌス凱旋門が建つ。神殿，劇場，図書館，集会所，浴場などがほぼ完全な形で残る。壮大で整然とした計画都市で，〈北アフリカのポンペイ〉とも呼ばれる。1982年，世界文化遺産に登録。
