1798‐1872 Dutch politician. Born in Zwolle. He studied classical studies in Amsterdam and Leiden, and studied history and philosophy in Germany from 1820 to 1824, where he was influenced by romanticism and historical jurisprudence. He lectured on politics and diplomatic history at the University of Ghent in Belgium, but left the university when Belgium gained independence in 1830. The following year, he became a professor at the Faculty of Law at Leiden University. In the late 1930s, he gradually transformed from a conservative to a radical liberal, and in 1839 he published "De Constitutionale," in which he criticized the autocratic rule of King William I of the Netherlands and called for constitutional reform.
