A Ukrainian-born pianist. Born in Zhytomyr in northwestern Ukraine (then part of Russia). His father was a German born in Poland. He studied under the famous teacher GG Neugaus (1888-1964) at the Moscow Conservatory, and made his debut in 1940 with the premiere of Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 6 while still a student. In 1945, he won the All-Soviet Music Competition, and later gave recitals in Eastern Europe, gaining fame. His father, Theophilus, was reported as a German spy in 1941 after the start of the German-Soviet War and executed by firing squad, and his mother, Anna, left for West Germany after World War II, so he was banned from performing in the West for a long time and was called the "phantom pianist." He finally made his debut in the United States in 1960, and then made his debuts all over Europe. He gained fame as a virtuoso comparable to Horowitz. After that, he performed with many Western renowned musicians, including Fischer-Dieskau and Carlos Kleiber, and delivered rich and brilliant performances of repertoire ranging from JS Bach to works of his time. He also performed many premieres, including Prokofiev's late piano sonatas, the Cello Sonata with Rostropovich (premiered in 1949), and Shostakovich's Violin Sonata with Oistrakh (premiered in 1969). He first visited Japan in 1970. → Gilels / Bashmet Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
