A river in the southern United States. One of the tributaries of the Mississippi River. It has a total length of 1,426 km. It begins at the confluence of two tributaries that originate in the southern Appalachian Mountains near Knoxville in eastern Tennessee. It flows southwest into Alabama, turns west, then flows north to join the Ohio River. Many dams have been built by the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority).
