A bridge over the Kamo River (Kamo River) in Kyoto. It is so named because it is located on Gojo Street, but the current Gojo Street is the former Rokujo Bomon Koji, and the Gojo Bridge, where Ushiwakamaru and Benkei met in legend, was located on the current Matsubara Street (old Gojo Oji) until the Middle Ages (around the current Matsubara Bridge). The change in the street name and the relocation of the bridge are said to have been ordered by Toyotomi Hideyoshi when the Great Buddha Hall of Hoko-ji Temple was built in 1589. The old Gojo Bridge was also called Kiyomizu Bridge because it was on the pilgrimage route to Kiyomizu Temple, and it was also called Kanjin Bridge because repairs to damaged areas were carried out through fundraising by the monks of Kiyomizu Temple. It was already built in the first half of the 12th century, and is sung about as a stone bridge in the Ryojin Hisho. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
