Sumie (Sumiyoshi) - Suminoe

Japanese: 住江(住吉) - すみのえ

Utamakura. The name Suminoe-cho remains in Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka City. The section on Emperor Nintoku in the Kojiki states that "He established the port of Suminoe...". It was in Sumiyoshi County, Settsu Province, and was used by Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty. After the Manyoshu, this area was often written as Sumiyoshi, and Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine is still located there today. It came to be read as Sumiyoshi, just as Hiyoshi Shrine is read as Hiyoshi Shrine. During the Heian period, Suminoe was mainly used for an inlet, and Sumiyoshi was used for the name of a county, shrine, bay, or village, and became a separate word.

歌枕。大阪市住吉区に墨之江町の名が残る。《古事記》の仁徳天皇条に〈墨江（すみのえ）之津を定め……〉とある。摂津国住吉（すみよし）郡で，遣唐使もここを利用した。《万葉集》以降この地域一帯は〈住吉〉と表記されることが多くなり，現在も住吉大社がある。日吉（ひえ）神社が日吉（ひよし）神社と読まれるのと同様に，それが〈すみよし〉と読まれるようになった。平安時代にはおもに〈すみのえ〉は入江，〈すみよし〉は郡名，社名，浦，里などに用い，別語になった。
