Also called devitrified ceramics, glass ceramics, and crystallized glass. A ceramic product that has lost its glass properties and crystallized. Adding a small amount of titanium oxide to glass or exposing it to neutrons, gamma rays, X-rays, or ultraviolet rays creates many fine particles. When this is heat-treated, the fine particles become nuclei and the glass crystallizes. Examples of this include Pyroceram and Photoceram from Corning Glass Works in the United States, which have a low expansion rate, high heat resistance, and great mechanical strength. In addition to household items such as pots and kettles, they are also used as high-end building wall materials, as a high-strength electrically insulating material for integrated circuit boards, and as a coating for protecting the surfaces of missiles and rockets.
