Nasturtium - Kinrenka

A climbing annual plant of the Bignoniaceae family (APG classification: Bignoniaceae). It is native to cool mountainous regions such as Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. Its stems are hairless and have tangled petioles, and its leaves are shield-shaped. The flowers are bilaterally symmetrical, with five sepals and five petals, and a spur. There are horticultural varieties with single and double flowers, and the flower colors are vermilion, peach, orange, yellow, and pale yellow. There are varieties such as the Greem and Jewel types, and a variety with variegated leaves called the Alaska type. It is weak in the summer heat, but grows well in spring and autumn, and produces many flowers. The stems and leaves have a fragrant and spicy taste, and the new shoots can be used in salads and as a spice. In Europe, the tuberous roots of the bulbous T. tuberosum Ruiz et Pav. are used as vegetables.

ノウゼンハレン科（APG分類：ノウゼンハレン科）のつる性一年草。英名ナスターチウムnastertium。和名ノウゼンハレンともいう。メキシコ、ペルー、コロンビアなどの山地の冷涼地原産。茎は無毛で葉柄が絡まる性質をもち、葉は盾状円形。花は左右相称、萼(がく)、花弁ともに5枚で距(きょ)がある。園芸種に一重咲き、八重咲きがあり、花色は朱赤、桃、橙(だいだい)、黄、淡黄など。品種にグリーム系、ジュエル系など、斑(ふ)入り葉品種にアラスカがある。夏の暑さには弱いが、春、秋にはよく育ち、花数も多い。茎葉には香気と辛味があり、新芽はサラダや香辛料として利用できる。ヨーロッパでは球根性のT. tuberosum Ruiz et Pav.の塊根を野菜として利用する。
