1753‐1801 French writer. Born in the south of France, he studied at a seminary and then entered Parisian society. He called himself a count, and his cheerful and unrestrained personality has left him with many anecdotes. His brilliant writing style made him a great enemy in his "Les le études contemporains" (published anonymously in 1788, co-written with Chancenet), which ridiculed contemporary writers. After the French Revolution, he also took the side of the court and wrote letters against politicians, which led to him being pursued by revolutionary forces, and he traveled abroad several times before dying in Berlin. However, the work that has left his name in the history of literature and language is his "Discours sur l'université de la langue française" (1784), which won the Berlin Academy's essay prize.
