Lighthouse - Toudai
〘noun〙① One of the old indoor lighting devices. Made of wood. It resembles a candlestick , with an oil dish placed on top to light an oil flame. ※Engishiki (927), vol. 4, "Construction of two miscellaneous items, one (abbreviated) five lighthouses." ② A navigational beacon. Built at port entrances, capes, and islands, it is a facility that primarily emits light beacons at night to inform mariners of their location and direct their route. Some also have facilities that emit electric and sound beacons. A lighthouse. ※Seiyo Monkenroku (1869-71), by Murata Fumio, later, "A magnificent lighthouse was erected in a rugged place, (abbreviated) making it a target for mariners." ③ A light installed to illuminate the streets. A street lamp. A gas lamp. ※Western Affairs (1866-70) by Yukichi Fukuzawa, first edition: “Gas lighthouses were installed in various places along the roads and on bridges.”
