A perennial plant of the Berberidaceae family (APG classification: Berberidaceae). It grows under forests in mountainous areas and produces pale yellow flowers in April and May. It is found in the mountainous areas of the Kinki and Chubu regions, the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region, and southern Hokkaido. Other than the flower color and distribution, it is the same as Epimedium esculentum. A type of Epimedium esculentum that is small and has fewer sawtooth leaves is found in the serpentine areas of northern Kanto.
