1572‐1638 Patriarch of Constantinople. He attempted to reform the Eastern Orthodox Church under the Ottoman Empire and establish its doctrine. Born in Crete, he was educated in Italy and developed anti-Latin sentiments. He was ordained in Constantinople and was soon sent to Poland to help restore the Orthodox Church in the country, where the issue of union had become serious. During this time, he came into contact with the Lutherans in Wilna (now Vilnius) and was greatly influenced by them personally.
