Monogamy

...In freely moving animals, the ability to distinguish between mates must be well developed in order for a pair bond to exist for at least some time. In invertebrates, the degree of mating pattern development is low, but among vertebrates, it is particularly well developed in birds and mammals.

This refers to a situation in which one male and one female form a pairing relationship for a certain period of time. The length of time that a pairing lasts varies by species, with some species changing partners repeatedly during a single breeding season and others remaining in the same pair for over a decade.
