Max Liebermann

Japanese: リーバーマン - りーばーまん(英語表記)Max Liebermann
Max Liebermann

German painter. Born into a wealthy factory owner's family in Berlin. He studied at the Weimar School of Fine Arts and lived in Paris from 1873 to 1878. During this time he visited Barbizon in 1874 and was influenced by Corot, Troyon, Millet and others. He lived in Munich from 1878 to 1884, and then settled in Berlin. After 1890 he embraced Impressionism and became a representative German Impressionist painter in the fields of landscapes, genres and portraits, including his masterpiece "Woman and Goats" (1890, Neue Pinakothek, Munich). In 1898 he founded the Berlin Secession and served as its chairman until 1911. He particularly loved the scenery of the Netherlands and stayed there regularly every year, producing many works including "Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam" (1905, Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne). He served as president of the Prussian Academy of Arts from 1820 to 1933, but was ostracized by the Nazis as a degenerate artist and died in Berlin.
