This was the world's first railway on which a steam locomotive carried ordinary passengers. It opened on September 15, 1830, between the industrial city of Manchester in central England and the port city of Liverpool. The Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened five years earlier, is famous as the world's first public railway to use a steam locomotive, but the steam locomotive only pulled freight cars; passenger cars were pulled by horses. This was the first full-scale railway to use a steam locomotive to carry both passengers and freight. The maiden train, pulled by the Rocket built by G. Stevenson, took four and a half hours to cover the 50 km distance.
