It is a type of poison gas, and the main chemicals are chloroacetophenone (CN), a yellowish brown solid, and chlorobenzideline malononitrile (CS), a white crystalline solid. When these substances are sprayed, even a small amount of them can cause problems in human behavior when they come into contact with the human lacrimal gland or olfactory cells. However, since they do not have a lethal effect unless they are in high concentrations, they are used in chemical warfare and are sprayed by security authorities with grenades and water cannons to suppress mass movements, as they are non-lethal chemical weapons.

毒ガスの一種で、黄褐色固体のクロロアセトフェノン（CN）や白色結晶固体のクロロベンジデリンマロノニトリル（CS）などの化学物質がそのおもなもの。これらの物質を散布すると、人間の涙腺(るいせん)や嗅覚(きゅうかく)細胞に微量に触れるだけで、人間の行動に障害を生じる。しかし高濃度でなければ致死作用に及ばないので、非致死性化学兵器であるとの理由で、化学戦に使用したり、大衆行動鎮圧のために治安当局が手榴(しゅりゅう)弾や放水車によって散布使用することもある。
