In March 1437, he succeeded his father Yoshimochi as Shogun, but Yoshimochi continued to refer to himself as "Muromachi-dono" and personally controlled government affairs, while Yoshikazu was a complete puppet. In October of the same year, he became a councilor, and in January of the following year, he was promoted to Junior Fourth Rank, but the following month, he fell ill and died. He was 19 years old. After his death, Yoshimochi continued to personally control affairs, and as he had no siblings, the position of Shogun remained vacant for about four years.
