1863‐1944 A French radical politician. Originally an expert in finance, he served as finance minister several times and devoted himself to tax reform. He was an advocator of Franco-German cooperation and opposed the pro-war faction. Although he was a capable politician, he was also hated. Just before World War I, his wife shot and killed Gaston Calmette, editor-in-chief of Le Figaro, who was an anti-Cailleau critic. During the war, he was accused of conspiring against Germany by his former enemies, including Clemenceau, and was imprisoned for three years after the war. After being pardoned, he returned to politics and worked on post-war financial restructuring. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
