The notation method using five lines, which was almost perfected in the 16th and 17th centuries in the West, is now widely used around the world. This method allows you to indicate beats and intervals by writing notes and rests on the staves and at the intervals between them, but it also has a major drawback. When a composer creates a piece of music, the image of the piece cannot be accurately conveyed to the performer using only the five lines, and the composer's intentions cannot be expressed correctly during the performance. This is why performance marks were invented. Performance marks are letters, words, and symbols used as an auxiliary means to indicate nuances that cannot be expressed by notes and rests alone when notating music on musical staves. These performance marks can be broadly divided into tempo marks, expression marks, dynamic marks, symbols for singing style and performance style, and ellipsis. Physically accurate speeds are expressed by symbols such as ♩＝ (for example, ♩＝88 indicates 88 quarter notes per minute), but in actual performance, speeds are specified more relatively by words.
