...As described above, fungi have both sexual and asexual stages in their life cycle, and because there are large differences in the shapes of each stage (such as the ascocarp and conidia stages, and the basidiomycete fruiting body and mycelium stages), they are given separate scientific names, and when both stages are known, the scientific name given to the sexual stage takes precedence. In addition, with regard to fungi, the two stages are often referred to as the sexual stage (teleomorph) and the asexual stage (anamorph) (Figure).

Since a great variety of systems have been proposed for the phylogenetics of fungi, and since new facts, concepts, ultrastructural, and genetic/biochemical data are constantly being added, the current classification system should be considered provisional.
