The capital of Virginia, USA. It is located 160km south of Washington DC, near the falls of the James River, and is blessed with a warm climate. Originating as a former trading settlement, it flourished as a distribution center for Virginia tobacco from early on, and after a history of fighting with Indians, it became the state capital in 1780. During the Civil War, it was an important military target for the Union Army as the capital of the South. It endured the recession of the 1930s, but industry boomed with the outbreak of World War II. Richmond is rich in historical sites, including the Capitol Building with its statue of G. Washington and St. John's Church, where P. Henry gave his "Liberty or Death" speech during the American Revolutionary War. Richmond National Battlefield Park is located nearby. As a commercial city, it boasts a wide commercial area, and its industries are diverse, including tobacco, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. It also has educational facilities such as the University of Richmond, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Virginia State Library. It is home to the Robert Lee House and the Edgar Poe Memorial Museum. Population: 204,214 (2010).
