A marine fish of the family Acanthidae in the order Perciformes (illustration). Also known as Shimaisagi. It is widely distributed from the western Pacific to the Indian Ocean. In Japan, it is found mostly in central and southern Honshu, but also in the Tohoku region. It is a familiar fish with a body shape similar to that of a grunt, and has many local names. It has several vertical stripes on its body, so it is called Shimaio in Lake Hamana, Shimadai in Ishikawa Prefecture, and Suminagashi in Osaka Prefecture. Like other species of Acanthidae such as Kotohiki, it vibrates its swim bladder to make a gurgling sound, which is why it is called Utautai in the Tango region, Fuefuki in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, and Horafuki in Wakayama Prefecture.
