Sponge - Sponge

A marine animal belonging to the phylum Porifera, class Hexactinellida, family Rossella. The largest species among hexactinellida can reach up to 1 meter in length. The body is bell- or vase-shaped, stands upright with the mouth facing up, and is attached to rocks at the base. The outer and inner surfaces of the body wall are smooth. The hexactinellidae of tiny bone fragments scattered within the body have broom-like branching ends. They are known to live in large numbers on the deep sea floor of Sagami Bay, 500 to 900 meters deep.

海綿動物門六放海綿綱ロッセラ科に属する海産動物。六放海綿類中もっとも大形の種類で1メートルに達するものもある。体は鐘状あるいは花瓶状で、口を上にして直立し、基部で岩などに付着している。体壁の外面、内面も滑らかである。体内に散在する微小骨片の六放体は、その枝の端が箒(ほうき)状に分枝している。相模(さがみ)湾の500～900メートルの深海底に多数生息することが知られている。
