A city in the southeast of Staffordshire County, mid-west of England, England. It is part of the Lichfield district, including the surrounding area. It is located about 25 km north of Birmingham, and faces a tributary of the River Trent. It is a residential area and agricultural and pastoral areas, and various retail businesses, service businesses, and light industries are carried out. It is an old town recorded as the seat of a bishopric in the Historia Ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (731/732) by St. Bede, who was active in the first half of the 8th century, and old buildings and historical sites, including a cathedral built in the 13th and 14th centuries, are preserved. It is the birthplace of Samuel Johnson, a well-known poet and lexicographer, and his birthplace is now the Johnson Museum. Area: 329 km2 . Area population: 92,232 (2001).
