Licchavi (English spelling)

Japanese: リッチャビ(英語表記)Licchavi
Licchavi (English spelling)
A tribe in ancient North India. Their state was one of the "16 great nations." Their capital was Vaishali (Besali). They adopted a tribal republic (Sangha) system, and the highest organ of the state, the Tribal Assembly, was attended by 7,707 people called Raja (royalty). They were the leaders of the Vṛjji (Vajji) Confederacy, which united other republican states, and are often identified with the Brij people. Buddha is said to have given seven reasons for the strength of the Licchavi nation, including unity and respect for tradition.
