...A glass tube with a volumetric scale, with a glass stopcock at the bottom, or a rubber tube with a glass bulb and a thin glass tube with a pinch cock, which can be opened and closed to drain the required amount of liquid inside, and the volume of the liquid drained can be determined accurately from the difference in the readings on the scale before and after. The most typical one is the Geissler burette, with a stopcock, as shown on the left in the figure. When reading the scale, a meniscus (a curved surface caused by surface tension) forms on the liquid surface at the top, so care must be taken when reading the scale, and care must be taken not to drain the liquid too quickly, as a small amount of the liquid that has adhered to the wall of the vessel will flow down later. ...
