A former town in Higashikanbara County, eastern Niigata Prefecture. The main settlement is in the Tsugawa Basin, where the Agano River flows, and once flourished as a post station on the Aizu Kaido road and as a river port. The Ban'etsu West Line and the Ban'etsu Expressway pass through the town, and there are factories producing sake, lumber, chips, etc. The Agano River Line is famous for its beautiful valley. In April 2005, it merged with Kanose Town, Kamikawa Village, and Mikawa Village in Higashikanbara County to become Aga Town. 84.19 km2 . 5,255 people (2003). 新潟県東部,東蒲原(ひがしかんばら)郡の旧町。主集落は阿賀野川が流れる津川盆地にあり,かつて会津街道の宿駅,河港として栄えた。磐越西(ばんえつさい)線,磐越自動車道が通じ,酒造,木材,チップなどの工場がある。渓谷美で有名な阿賀野川ラインがある。2005年4月東蒲原郡鹿瀬町,上川村,三川村と合併し町制,阿賀町となる。84.19km2。5255人(2003)。
