The land of medieval samurai. In the narrow sense, it refers to the land of the head of the samurai family, such as the Taira, Genji, and Ashikaga, or the samurai public authority that established the shogunate, but in the broad sense, it also includes the land of shugo and local samurai in general. Here, we will take a broader definition. First, looking at the land of the head of the samurai family and the shogunate, the Seiwa Genji and Ise Taira clans, who were both low-ranking government officials and heads of the samurai family, already owned a number of manors in their base areas, mainly in Kanto, Ise, and Iga, in the late Heian period. Of these, the Taira clan, after the Heiji Rebellion, entered the world of government officials and aristocrats and took control of power, expanding their land by accumulating manors and fiefdoms, and at their peak they owned more than 500 manors and more than 30 fiefdoms.
