A former town in Awa District, southern Chiba Prefecture. Facing the Pacific Ocean, the town is centered around Wada Port, through which the Uchibo Line passes, and coastal fishing is thriving. Rice, livestock, and the cultivation of vegetables and flowers (oysters) are also practiced. The coast is part of Minamiboso Quasi-National Park. In March 2006, it merged with Awa District's Tomiura Town, Toyama Town, Shirahama Town, Chikura Town, Maruyama Town, and Miyoshi Village to become a city, Minamiboso City. 32.45 km2 . 5,817 people (2003). 千葉県南部,安房(あわ)郡の旧町。太平洋に臨み内房線が通じる和田港が中心で,沿岸漁業が盛ん。米作,畜産,野菜や花卉(かき)の栽培も行われる。海岸は南房総国定公園に属する。2006年3月,安房郡富浦町,富山町,白浜町,千倉町,丸山町,三芳村と合併し市制,南房総市となる。32.45km2。5817人(2003)。
